FLEXIBILITY
“In any connected system, the component of the system with the widest range of variability will be the controlling agent” – W Ross Ashby 1956
Given that one person cannot control another they can only influence them so when people appear to have no choice in their behaviour they are the ones who are stuck.
If we think of life, the universe and everything being a series of connected systems are changing one part influences a change somewhere else. Each part mutually influences the other. When you work with someone they will influence you as much as you influence them.
So, to be successful we need to adapt to survive as a member of a system it requires a minimum amount of flexibility more variability that is in that system the more flexibility people will require to cope with it.
For example, if an organisation knows its customers want to communicate with it via email, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and website, they must be flexible enough to offer them to match customer expectations.
Being flexible enables you to thrive on change and uncertainty.
