Explanation

Emotions enable us to connect with what it means to be human. They are our internal navigation system – our personal SatNav, that takes us into a more heartfelt relationship with life, other people and ourselves.

Moods affect our personality, how we are, and can enhance or endanger our health and well-being. What we say or choose to do depends on how we are feeling at the time. Life can be volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. Negative emotions can hold us back from being your best selves and realising our fullest potential. If we let a mood state get embedded into the normal flow of daily life it can become the filter through which we create the reality we live in. It becomes our Way of Being in the world..

The diagram below is based on the work of Professor Alan Sieler and identifies the basic mood states that emerge from acceptance and non-acceptance.  For example, when we deeply experience wonder and ambition we are living in acceptance of life’s ambiguity and uncertainty. It requires us to reframe our thinking to move our mind away from sadness, grieving, resentment, resignation and anxiety.
