Explanation
The concept of a “Way of Being” is a metaphor for understanding the structure of our nervous system, which has four cognitive domains that give us a unique mind that shapes our consciousness, thoughts and mood states. Four domains combine to create our view of reality, one impacting the others subtly. See the diagrams below.
Our nervous system produces the processes that determine how we perform, observe, and interpret our experiences. These processes are referred to as languaging, emotioning, presencing and relating. This means it’s not about a balance between equals. We continuously adapt and adjust our Way of Being to fit our context and construct our reality.
For example, language can affect our mood state, and we observe its effect on our body posture, the quality of our relationships with other people and our view of the world. A bent posture affects our mood, reflected in our chosen words and our impact on others.
When languaging, the mind says, “My thoughts are . ..” “My perspective on this is. . .”
When emotioning, the mind says, “I am feeling comfortable/uneasy about.. . ”
When presencing, the mind says, “I am noticing tension in my body and its impact on relationships when. . . . .”
When relating, my mind says, “I am captivated as I connect with this person when. . . . .”
