REQUEST

A request when we ask someone to take action to resolve a concern we have. Both requests and offers are ways in which we use conversation to coordinate actions with others. We get results through our ability to collaborate and make things happen for each other. If we want the future to be different we have to make requests and secure offers today to get the result we want.

When someone says “yes” to our request or offer a commitment is made. They are promises to act within a given timeframe, cultural context and mood state. For example, if we request or offer a cup of coffee and it’s accepted we would expect at least an apology or compensation if it doesn’t arrive as expected. That’s why we should follow up a “yes” with clarity about what has been agreed and by when so we have a defined observable standard on which to assess the response. For example, do they understand, have the skills, are reliable and willing to be held accountable.happens
