Managing your emotions involves accepting them without judgment. They can emerge beyond your control unless you emote them as an actor would when putting on a performance. You wouldn’t judge yourself for feeling hungry, tired or cold. What is needed is compassionate acceptance and critical analysis. You need to understand why you are having the feeling as this could be valuable information for not being controlled by it. The thoughts might be unfounded, inaccurate or destructive, so what’s important is to deal with the thinking behind the emotion, not the emotion itself. To understand your emotions you have to treat them with respect and curiosity, not judgment. Nathaniel Branden describes them as “unconscious evaluations that cannot be commanded out of existence.”.
